Band: Briton Rites

It all began during the Halloween season of 2006 when Cauldron Born guitarist, Howie Bentley, formed his new band Briton Rites. Bentley had been recently inspired by the 1872 J. Sheridan Lefanu novel Carmilla, which told the story of a female vampire who preyed on pretty young girls. His new band would bring to life the ideas and feelings of 19th century gothic horror while combining it with the images and themes of the Hammer films from the 1950s, ‘60s, and ‘70s. Seeking an artistic outlet that combined his passion for dark European literature, the golden era of horror, and heavy music in the style of Black Sabbath and Witchfinder General, Briton Rites was born.

Bentley completed the music and lyrics with plans to not only play guitar and bass, but also sing for the band. However, a friend played him a song with Phil Swanson on vox and Bentley immediately recruited him for Briton Rites. The band recorded a demo (including “Carmilla”, and “A Meeting in the Woods") which became an instant hit with underground metal fans. The band, which now included Corbin King on drums, followed up the demo with the full length album entitled For Mircalla in 2010.

The intense narrative of the lyrics combined with the heavy blood-soaked riffage made For Mircalla an underground metal success. Bentley immediately started writing material for the second Briton Rites album, but by the time he was ready to start recording in 2012, his wife had become tragically ill. She passed away in 2014 and Bentley shelved the album before retiring from music all together.

After a nearly decade long hiatus, Bentley decided to return to music, reforming Briton Rites with Swanson and King. This incarnation of the band added John Leeson on bass. Now, with Briton Rites reborn, Bentley was finally able to record the album he had written years ago.

Therefore, In December of 2020, Occulte Fantastique emerged from the black abyss of time. Briton Rites shall assail your ears with eight new invocations of demonic dread, recalling decadent ruined realms, demonolatry, failed exorcisms, and necrophilia.

Embrace horror. Revel in sin. Dark ecstasies. World without end.
