OVRFWRD - "StarStuff"
A diverse sound palette that crosses elements of progressive rock and jazz
Instrumental four-piece founded in 2012, OVRFWRD have in "StarStuff" their fourth album. In this new effort, the group from Minneapolis (USA) presents a warm offering through a diverse sound palette that crosses elements of progressive rock and jazz, all in a tender, dreamy and somewhat mysterious fusion that aims for a sense of continuous and forward progression so as never to become stagnant in the same emotions and labels.
From spacey atmospheres, elegant piano and flutes evoking folklore to soft-rock guitars unfolding into magnificent, sentimental solos, "StarStuff" is a colorful journey that generates constant comfort and smiles.
Such relaxation heard on "StarStuff" has to do with the way guitarist Mark Ilaug has approached the new work. Rather than experiment too much and possibly complicate things, Ilaug has chosen to focus on just one tonality and one amp, which leads to a very pertinent coherence across seven compelling and ethereal tracks. Using the Kiesel SH6 guitar and Victory V30 amplifier, the musician and his colleagues recorded the album quickly.
Despite the obvious structures and the focus on a cohesive musical narrative, the sound style that OVRFWRD present has a lot of improvisation. «We approached the songs as a conversation between us, with a story and a dynamic flow», comments Mark Ilaug. «With the guitars, I try to do something different with each album, at least as far as I'm concerned. There's blues material, jazz, a little shredding, ambient tones. It was a lot of fun and challenging. We recorded in live mode, all together in one take (we usually manage in three or less). Then we did the necessary overdubs and fixes.»
Ideal for fans of Genesis and Porcupine Tree.
